Our Story
Founded in the Appalachian Highlands
Appalachian Highland Celts was founded in 1992, rooted in the belief that the Appalachian Highlands are deeply shaped by Celtic heritage and that this heritage deserves to be preserved, shared, and actively lived. What began as a local effort grew from the understanding that many people in the region carried Celtic traditions in their families, music, and customs, but lacked a central place to explore and celebrate them.
From Local Society to Regional Identity
The organization originally formed as the Upper East Tennessee Celtic Society. Its early mission was straightforward: educate the public about Celtic history and culture in ways that felt accessible and engaging. As the organization expanded and its reach extended beyond a single town or county, the name Appalachian Highland Celts was adopted to better reflect both the cultural focus and the regional character of the community it serves.

Celtic Roots in Appalachia
Celtic heritage is woven into Appalachian history. Scots-Irish settlers brought traditions of music, storytelling, craftsmanship, faith, and strong community bonds that helped shape life in the mountains. Many of the sounds, stories, and values associated with Appalachia today trace directly back to these roots. Appalachian Highland Celts exists to help people recognize those connections and understand how centuries-old traditions continue to influence the region’s identity.
A Mission Built on Participation
From the beginning, the organization has emphasized experience over observation. Celtic culture is not treated as a static relic, but as a living tradition best understood through participation. Music, athletics, storytelling, food, language, and shared gatherings form the foundation of how the organization educates and engages the public.
Events That Bring History to Life
Appalachian Highland Celts is best known for hosting and supporting festivals, cultural events, and heritage programs throughout the year. These gatherings create opportunities for people of all ages to experience Celtic traditions firsthand, from Highland Games and live music to clan gatherings and seasonal celebrations. Each event is designed to foster learning, connection, and a sense of belonging.
Community First
Cultural preservation goes hand in hand with service. Throughout its history, the organization has worked to give back to the broader community, supporting charitable causes and local initiatives. This commitment reflects the belief that honoring heritage also means strengthening the community that sustains it.
What Sets Us Apart
Appalachian Highland Celts is grounded in authenticity. It is not a traveling festival or a reenactment group detached from place, but a community-based organization shaped by the Appalachian Highlands themselves. Education is approachable, traditions are respected, and the organization remains intentionally welcoming to newcomers, families, and longtime heritage advocates alike.
A Living Story
More than three decades after its founding, Appalachian Highland Celts continues to evolve. Volunteers, performers, educators, athletes, sponsors, and supporters all play a role in shaping what comes next. The organization remains focused on its original purpose: preserving, celebrating, and passing on Celtic heritage in a way that is meaningful, inclusive, and firmly rooted in the Appalachian Highlands.
This is not just a story of the past. It is a living tradition, carried forward by a community that believes culture survives when people come together to share it.
